Professor Nyengo Mkandawire is a consultant orthopaedic surgeon working at Queen Elizabeth Central Hospital in Malawi, and as Dean of Faculty of Medicine at the University of Malawi College of Medicine. He is also a Commissioner for the Lancet Commission on Global Surgery (2015).

He is also a Principal Investigator for SURG-Africa, an surgical systems implementation research project looking at surgical care at district-level hospitals in Malawi, Zambia and Tanzania.

In this 2-part SURG-Africa interview with Antonio Osuna from Royal College of Surgeons in Ireland, he reflects on surgical care in Malawi, his journey into orthopaedic surgery, and his role in developing surgical research and training to help improve access to surgical care in Malawi.
